Capturing Culture: Indigenous Dance/Portrait Photoshoot

As a photographer, stepping into Indigenous photography is not just about capturing images; it's about telling stories, preserving traditions and honouring the richness of their heritage. I want to connect viewers with the beauty and resilience.

Recently, I had the privilege of photographing Wally, Tee, and Lexi. It allowed me to see more of their culture, capturing something I’ve been yearning to photograph for so long.

Getting ready for this photoshoot required a lot more than just packing my equipment. It required understanding, planning, and respect for the First Nations customs and traditions. I knew I couldn’t just do it on my own. I needed help. That’s when I called upon my friend and Creative Director of the Shkagamik-Kwe Health Centre, Melanie Laquerre. I knew she would be a great liaison and guide to making this rewarding for both myself and everyone else.

Wally, Tee, and Lexi each had their own unique identity, symbols, and ceremonies, and it was important that I walked into the photoshoot with sensitivity and awareness. Having that liaison allowed us all to enjoy it with warmth and openness.

I knew the pride in their culture was so powerful and I felt honoured they trusted me.

When we discussed the vision for the photoshoot, we wanted to make sure every detail would reflect the authenticity and spirit.

When the photoshoot started, the vibrant colours, intricate patterns, and symbolism came alive. Traditional attire, feathers and beads, and sacred artifacts passed down through generations — all regalia that held significance and meaning.

I knew exactly what lighting and composition I wanted to create, which truly felt amazing after I succeeded. The most rewarding part of the photoshoot was seeing the pride and confidence from Wally, Tee, and Lexi in front of my camera. Through my photography, I wanted to celebrate the beauty of culture and diversity. In between shots, they shared stories and taught me things I never really knew or understood. It really made me realize the importance of preserving and honouring this culture for future generations.

One of my favourite images is of Wally staring directly into my camera: his eyes, his expression. You can see the reflection of resilience, strength, and pride. I sensed his spirit shined through.

As I packed up, I couldn't help but feel a profound sense of gratitude. Through photography, I had been granted a glimpse into a world rich in culture and tradition. My hope is that the images captured during this photoshoot will be a reminder of the importance of embracing diversity and preserving cultures for generations to come.

In the end, this photoshoot was not just about taking pictures; it was about honouring and celebrating Indigenous Peoples and fostering understanding.

Their stories should not just be told but celebrated always and forever.
